Course overview
This is a one-day course designed to give a sound introduction to Safe System Assessments including an overview of the safe system approach and vision zero.
This course is aimed at professionals who are expected to carry out or commission Safe System Assessments and transport engineers whose projects are assessed.
The training is undertaken in a workshop format, with introductory lectures in the first part of the day and discussions and practical exercises making up most of the second half of the day.
Course content
The first part of the course is undertaken in a mixed lecture and workshop format, covering the basic skills and knowledge required to understand the process and
undertake assessments. Topics covered include:
- Safe System Fundamentals
- What does a “safe system” transport environment look like?
- Stages of the Safe System Assessment process
- Assessing risk metrics using the framework:
- Exposure
- Likelihood
- Severity
- Vulnerable road users
The second part of the course is a practical workshop session which involves working through practical examples in the local context. This will include an
introduction to a real-world case study to be undertaken by delegates following the course.
Aims and objectives
The course gives participants a sound background on Safe System Assessments and provides practical experience of assessments through the workshop session. Delegates are encouraged to share their experiences throughout the sessions to develop a shared understanding in the local context. On completion, delegates will have a clear understanding of the safe system approach and the assessment process with the knowledge required to undertake assessments.
