Matthew Noon

Associate Director, Transportation and Safe Systems
MAppSc, BRS

Matthew has a background in transportation planning and leads our Road Safety area, which has a particular focus on ensuring that all people using our transport systems, whether on foot, by bike or vehicle – for personal or business/freight purposes, can travel safely.

Matthew helps public and private sector clients solve problems. He prides himself on looking for new, innovative ways to solve transport challenges using data, sound transport planning and engineering principles and an understanding of human behaviour. In addition to his focus on road safety, his experience and areas of interest extend to urban development, business cases, public transport and digital engineering.

About Matthew

Matthew did a Master’s degree in Resource Management, which built upon his undergraduate degree in Resource Studies, both from Lincoln University.

His career commenced with public transport, working across all aspects of operational and strategic planning; routing, scheduling, network development, community engagement, performance analysis and monitoring. As part of his OE, Matthew worked in central London for almost 10 years, coordinating and delivering transport projects in highly complex and challenging environments. His work included working on light rail schemes, as well as walking, cycling, freight and electric vehicle projects. A highlight of this time saw Matthew leading European Commission funded transnational research and knowledge sharing projects looking at the adoption and uptake of electric vehicles for both general and freight purposes.

Upon his return to New Zealand, Matthew joined Abley as a transportation consultant and is now an Associate Director and Road Safety Area lead.

Matthew is passionate about new technology and using it to make lives better through a focus on addressing the end users needs. He was an early adopter of e-bikes and recognises that true transport freedom comes from being able to take a multi-modal approach to meeting transport needs, whether that is by foot, e-scooter, bike, bus or car. This can be demonstrated in his choice of a muscle car when driving American highways, through to trailer bikes when travelling with his family.
