Jared White

Jared helps New Zealand businesses and Local Authorities use transport models and transport planning techniques to assess projects ranging in scale from single intersections to citywide analyses.

Jared has skills in using many transport modelling software at macro to micro levels and design skills to provide solutions to a range of transport planning problems.

About Jared

Jared did his honours degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Canterbury graduating in 2003, focusing on Transportation.

He began his career at Gabites Porter where he worked on Strategic Transportation models of cities throughout New Zealand and Australia.  This gave Jared core skills in traffic generation, distribution and assignment.

Jared has always been interested in the intrinsic link between transport and land use and was initially drawn into the transport modelling field to work on ‘big picture’ strategic transport planning. However, he quickly realised that the linkage is evident for sites of all sizes and he’s since been involved in assessing the transportation effects of a variety of smaller development proposals.

In 2007 Jared moved to London in the UK for three and a half years on an OE, gaining a wealth of experience working as a traffic engineer.  He picked up valuable experience in using transport modelling software from the UK. Since joining Abley in 2011 he has furthered his experience in strategic modelling but also become highly experienced in Microsimulation modelling.

To complement his analytical skills in traffic flow at a micro level Jared is experienced as a SCATS operator helping out the Christchurch City Council in the Real Time operation room controlling the traffic signal network through Canterbury.  This fostered traffic signal design skills and enables Jared to understand the link between transport model simulation and real-world operation.

He loves using tools to represent actual conditions on a road network but it’s often challenging to ensure that the model is accurately replicating the queues and delays that are observed on site.  However, once it’s properly calibrated and validated, it’s very rewarding to be able to show clients – and councils – what the effects of the development traffic will be.
