Penny is a Principal Transportation Engineer in Abley’s People and Places team, focussed on how people move in urban environments.
She provides design advice for safe and healthy travel choices in urban environments, and leads Abley’s Road Safety Audit service.
Penny completed a Bachelor of Surveying at Otago University and worked as a surveyor for Cheal Consultants in Taupo after leaving university. During her OE in London she was introduced to transportation and started on the path to becoming a transportation engineer. Before joining Abley, Penny was the project manager responsible for the design and delivery of minor safety transport projects within the Christchurch City Council. This role saw her working closely with local community members, stakeholder groups and Community Boards.
Penny has played a central role in a range of projects here at Abley. In a recent project Penny identified a series of safety improvements and journey planning which helped DOC improve their road safety and visitor experience for key tourist and recreational destinations across New Zealand. Penny also provides transport advice for school projects, either directly to the Ministry of Education or as part of the design team. She has also worked on a range of development projects including sport and recreational centres, a coach hub and the Christchurch airport hotel.
When Penny is not living and breathing transport engineering, she is busy with her young family who are currently training to complete the Otago rail trail.
