Abley presentations at the Transport Knowledge Conference

We’re looking forward to attending the Transport Knowledge Conference next week! Focused on Future Transport Direction in Aotearoa, the conference will explore the topics of climate change response, supply chain, COVID-19 lessons, transport system equity and healthy and safe people. The event provides an opportunity to bring together the latest research and evidence and discuss how these can work towards transport goals for Aotearoa. Two of the Abley team will be presenting at the conference and Andy Bartle and Jacob Pescini are also attending.

First up is Becky Tuke, who will step through a framework and methodology to plan and assess emergency evacuation routes. Aotearoa has its share of natural hazard-caused disasters. When evacuation is required, transport systems are critical to enable evacuation and keep people safe. Waka Kotahi engaged Abley to undertake research and develop a framework to identify, plan, design and assess evacuation routes. Malcolm Menzies of Waka Kotahi will join Becky and introduce the project and the Waka Kotahi research programme. Becky will then provide an overview of the framework, including considerations of evacuation factors, scenarios and route options. She will also demonstrate how it can be applied to different situations.

Jo Draper will present ‘E-Micromobility Safety – who does it affect?’ Jo will provide an overview of a research project that Abley has recently completed for ACC and Auckland Transport. The research looked into the safety outcomes of different micromobility devices. Electrically powered micromobility is a rapidly evolving field, with potential benefits for inclusive access. However knowledge about the safety outcomes for people in relation to different modes is limited. Jo will discuss our investigations, including research into reported injuries and incidents by device, surveys of users who reported crashing on a device, and on-street surveys of speed and use. Jo will summarise how different device use affects safety considerations in Auckland for all road users. She will also discuss what these findings may mean for infrastructure needs which authorities could consider to support the growing trend of micromobility.
