About Mat
Following a 15+ year career as a Firefighter, Mat did an honors degree in Civil Engineering at University of Auckland. He began his second career, as a transport planner, at Auckland Transport and Auckland Council.
In his role at Auckland Council, Mat provided transport planning advice on Structure Planning, the refresh of the Auckland Plan, the Future Urban Land Supply Strategy, the Regional Land Transport Plan, and the Regional Public Transport Plan. He provided strategic advice to senior leaders, elected members and wider stakeholders for major transport projects, plans and policies.
In his role at Auckland Transport, Mat led the review of third-party resource consents, engineering plan approvals, and resource consent hearings for South Auckland, and provided specialist input into plan changes and Notice of Requirement reviews. He also contributed to the Transport for Future Urban Growth project, which subsequently evolved into the Supporting Growth Alliance.
In 2017 Mat moved into consultancy, continuing his involvement with public sector by acting as a transport expert witness for Councils and Road Controlling Authorities, as well as assisting private organizations with master planning and consenting urban development.
Mat has a well-deserved reputation within both public and private sector organizations for his pragmatic approach, holistic thinking, and ability to balance the often-competing needs and desires that come with urban development. He loves building genuinely collaborative relationships with his clients and other transport professionals, leading to timely, workable and measurable outcomes.
