Data integration is assisting Surveyors to “turn up the heat”

From 1-3 August, Gavin Jeter, Principal FME Specialist, had the pleasure of attending the  2022 Survey + Spatial New Zealand conference in Rotorua, with this year’s theme “Turning up the Heat”. Gavin shares his highlights and insights from the conference…

It was my first time attending this conference and visiting Rotorua, so there were plenty of insights to gain, new people to meet, and places to visit near the lakeside venue.

With technical workshops, industry/wellbeing/economic presentations and a dinner, there were plenty of opportunities to learn and engage with some of New Zealand’s finest survey and spatial professionals.

Throughout the conference, it was invigorating to understand how Abley adds value to this industry. Our Digital Engineering team excels in data integration. Therefore, we develop processes and applications for stakeholders throughout the planning, design, build, maintenance process, including our survey-specific application: Enhanced Feature Capture.

On the final day of the conference, I enjoyed presenting Abley’s ventures into new field technology: Augmented Reality (AR), alongside Richard Harrison from Global Survey NZ. We shared techniques for accurate 3D model rendering, recommendations for setup within your AR application, and real-world examples (including the streetscape below and AR data collection).

Finally, it was a great surprise to have an industry peer who Abley is proud to work with, win the Spatial Stream Professional Excellence Award for 2022. A huge congratulations to Sam Williamson for the award and thank you for your contributions to the spatial industry.
