Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency, Abley and MRCagney are offering a one-day industry training course focussing on planning and design for pedestrians.

This course will be of value to anyone involved in planning, designing or overseeing urban projects and programmes, such as: project managers, transport planners, transport engineers, road safety auditors, advocates and elected members.

Course material is based on the national Pedestrian Network Guidance (PNG) and will focus on the practical application of real world examples.

The interactive programme includes:

  • Walking context and understanding pedestrians – characteristics, capabilities and requirements
  • Key principles – walkability, SOS principles, Safe System application
  • Planning methods
  • Paths for pedestrians – principles, geometry and surfaces
  • Crossing and intersection design – facility selection, design principles, design requirements, designing for all users
  • Supporting infrastructure – landscaping, street furniture, wayfinding, fencing, lighting and coloured surfacing

Participants will also hear about case studies from around New Zealand and take part in hands-on interactive quizzes, activities and exercises. Participants will need to undertake some pre-work (approx. 4 hours) before the course to maximise learning on the day.

Pre-work requirements

Participants will need to undertake some pre-work (up to 4 hours) before the course to maximise learning on the day. Pre-work information will be emailed to you upon registration.

Course participants are required to undertake the following activities prior to the course:

  1. Watch the below Waka Kotahi webinars (if you haven’t already) which can all be accessed from the Training and Capability page of the Pedestrian Network Guidance.
  2. Undertake a short walk around an urban area and either a) take note of some of the things you’ve learnt in the webinars, or b) imagine undertaking your walk from the perspective of a child or someone with a disability.

Fees (inclusive of GST)

Professional (non-volunteer) practitioners    $690 ($600 + GST)

Volunteer/community advocates*    $230 ($200 + GST)

*If you are a representative of a community organisation (e.g. Living Streets), please email multimodal@nzta.govt.nz with an email or letter of support from an office holder of the group.

Registrations close on 3 November.

Cancellations and non-attendance

Cancellations received after 3 November will incur a fee of $100 (+GST) per person. Non-attendance (‘no-shows’) will be charged at the full registration rate. Substitutions are welcomed at no charge. If the course is cancelled (e.g. due to low numbers), confirmed registrations will be refunded in full.
