Luke Elliott

Principal Transportation Planner
BSocSc, MUrbPlan

Luke helps clients with planning public transport services. These can anything from changing an existing bus route to include a new stop, to developing the business case and service plans for a new rapid transit corridor.

About Luke

Luke started his transport career in 2014, working for Auckland Transport in their public transport call centre, while studying for his Master of Urban Planning at the University of Auckland, before becoming a graduate planner in 2015.

As a graduate, Luke worked on Auckland Transport’s New Network – a total redesign of the city’s public transport services. Initially helping the team consult with the public on the proposed changes, he was promoted in 2016 to be the lead planner for the East Auckland. Luke saw this (and other regions) right through from consultation to implementation, giving him a range of public transport skills, including service planning, timetabling, infrastructure specification and public engagement.

From 2019 to 2024, Luke was Auckland Transport’s Principal Planner Rapid Transit Network. In this role, he expanded his project management and technical skills leading the development of both the Auckland Rapid Transit Pathway and the 2023-2031 Regional Public Transport Plan. Luke has extensive experience on public transport projects, including business case work.

Luke enjoys communicating technical information in an engaging and easy-to-understand way. He also has a passion for languages; he can speak English, te reo Māori, Italian, and is currently learning Mandarin Chinese.

Outside of work, Luke’s love for transport continues – he is a volunteer tram driver at Auckland’s Museum of Transport and Technology (MOTAT). Luke is also a keen cyclist, swimmer, and enjoys hiking in Aotearoa’s great outdoors.
