We are proud to be at the forefront of some inspirational software development projects that make our world safer, more sustainable, and just plain better!  We have developed a range of meaningful applications in support of road safety, carbon reduction and asset management.  We continue to experience growth in this area and looking to employ a Software Development Team Manager to lead this part of our business.

About the role

The Software Development Team Manager (SDTM) is primarily a commercial customer facing role that has overall responsibility for the commercial and financial delivery of projects to our clients.  Your clients not only include external clients, but internal teams at Abley who require software development services.  This includes managing projects and leading the software development team.

The SDTM has accountabilities in four main areas, namely:

  1. Team Management – manage and lead the development of a team of software developers through supporting team engagement and high performance.
  2. Project Development and Delivery – responsible for the planning, scoping and scheduling of activities to complete jobs to a high standard, whilst ensuring innovation, speed of delivery within the budgeted scope of the project.
  3. Business Development – Identify and pursue opportunities to sell our services to new and existing clients. Ensure the business plan for the business area (software development) is implemented.  The business plan aligns with the strategic objectives of our business, so an understanding of strategy and implementation of strategy is important.
  4. Client Relationship Management – build and maintain trusted client relationships by ensuring we provide quality solutions to our clients.

This role will oversee technical work, but the actual ‘doing’ of the work will be done by your team.

About you

  • A people leader – you are leading a team of software developers, so you need to bring your leadership ‘A’ game to the plate.
  • A brilliant communicator – you’ll be chatting to people in-person, via email or video conferencing, and in meetings. You need to be able to communicate in a clear, concise manner with your team, your colleagues and clients.
  • A builder of strong relationships – it is incredibly important that you’re approachable and can foster positive relationships with those you work with, both clients and colleagues. Your strong relationship skills will build a strong trust environment.
  • Be passionate about all things software and spatial – yes passion is one of our values and we want you to ooze passion.
  • Some technical skills – while this role oversees the technical work, the actual ‘doing of the work’ will be done by your team. That said, ideally you will have a background in software development and / or spatial and agile methodologies.
  • Full of positive energy – we want people to feel energised, inspired and motivated to be around you, so bring your ‘glass half-full’ attitude to work.

The Important Bits

This role is full time (but we would consider part-time for the right candidate) and based in our Auckland or Christchurch offices.

Each of our offices are centrally located with public transport only a hop, skip and a jump away.  If you’re a cyclist (like many of the Abley team) we also have great cycling facilities too.
